Obama, McCain - Judges
Jennifer Freeman

In last week's Liberty Belles article, we speculated about the kind of judges that Obama and McCain would likely appoint, if elected President. In Saturday night's "Saddleback Forum," hosted by Rick Warren (author of "The Purpose Driven Life"), our suspicions were definitively answered.

The question, posed to both candidates was, "Which of the Supreme Court justices would you NOT have appointed?"

Barack Obama replied that he would not have appointed: Clarence Thomas due to his lack of experience; Antonin Scalia because he disagrees with his views on the Constitution. And, John Roberts. Obama stated that the most important job of the Supreme Court is to guard against encroachment of the Executive Branch over the power of the other branches.

John McCain replied that he would not have appointed: Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, David Hackett Souter, and John Paul Stevens. McCain stated that the purpose of the Supreme Court is to uphold the Constitution. McCain further went on to state that Justices Alito and Roberts are his favorites.

In other words, Obama does not view the Supreme Court as a last resort for upholding the Constitution when the other two branches fail us. McCain, on the other hand, does see the Supreme Court as a final alternative to uphold the Constitution when all other efforts fail.

Considering their stated positions, it should come as no surprise that all of the judges Obama would NOT have appointed are the same judges who voted in favor of the Second Amendment as an individual right. And all of the judges McCain would NOT have appointed oppose the Second Amendment.

Supreme Court positions are assigned for life. Judging by the list of current Supreme Court justices below, it is reasonable to presume that 1-2 justices may be replaced during the next Presidential Election.

It's frightening to think that our rights have eroded to such an extent. Even more frightening, however, is the fact that anti-gun Obama has an even chance of winning the next election.
